Life at IIM Calcutta

Everyone knows why IIM Calcutta is so famous. But few people know that it also has a beautiful campus. Along with good infrastructure, the campus has seven lakes and green vegetation, which makes it an astonishing place to dwell in.

Situated amidst nature, one can notice birds, trees, lakes and greenery all over the campus. The campus is actually a bird sanctuary! Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Cuckoo (Koyal), Jungle Babbler, Indian Pond Heron, Greater Coucal, Crow are easily visible and identifiable. I don’t know the names of some of the birds which are often seen. There are migratory birds too which can be seen in winter. In the evening, there are so many birds chirping and making so much of noise, I sometimes wonder what they must be discussing. Even at night, they are not at rest. Hearing a Koyal singing melodiously at about 2’0 clock in the night surprises me and makes me think why is she singing at this point of time. While taking walk at night, occasionally one can spot an Owl.

The lakes and the trees provide a cool environment. My favorite place in the campus is the jetty which is located on one of the lakes. It provides a beautiful view of the campus. There is also a bridge which is a replica of Howrah Bridge on river Hoogly.

Though it is good to live in peaceful place like this, but it also turns out to be scary sometimes. Snakes and monitor lizards can be seen anytime and anywhere. Wild gigantic spider is also visible – often at home! There are ‘talking’ lizards whose noise, resembles a knock on the door. During rainy season, seeing snails, snakes, earthworms are common.

Vegetation and birds/animals go hand in hand. But situated far from the city, the campus is free from traffic and associated pollution. One can see stars clearly in the sky which is not possible in the city due to pollution. I really love residing in the campus and enjoy the environment here.
